So, what can we do?

The first step is self-explanatory; raise awareness.

This does not mean we should only highlight the risks of social media, but also speak about its benefits. In this age, social media has become such a necessity that its users will not be able to live without it. Campaigns against it would be ineffective because today's people will most likely be indifferent about it. We must promote safe and cautious use of social media.

The second step is to observe the "symptoms".

Although I am not against social media, the negative "consequences" (mentioned in Research) associated with it do pose a problem. Keep in mind, social media should not be put to blame as the sole reason for these "consequences".

Whether it's on Facebook or Instagram, we show only what we want to show. Compare Instagram to a fashion magazine, for example. Both portray heavily "filtered" images. For some, this leads to a heavy comparison between themselves and the "filtered" photos. Likewise, both will cause self-esteem issues. Symptoms such as self-esteem issues, envy towards another's lifestyle, not being able to perform without social media or even depression are indications of poor mental health. While depression may be difficult to notice at first, we are able to observe individuals by their social media posts for any indications. (Refer to Benefits)

This is when to seek support from counseling or charities such as the National Suicide Prevention Lifelineayemind or ditchthelabel.

The present and future revolves around social media.  As I previously mentioned, social media is a double-edged sword; it can be very beneficial if used correctly. To (future) parents: We have to inform the future generation to use social media wisely and cautiously. In the field of social networks, parents are entailed to become educated about the advantages and disadvantages of social media. They should not linger, but be aware of their children's online activities. Discussing social media protocols or etiquettes will not only establish a positive global digital citizenship, but also promote healthy lifestyle and behavior.
